Joana specialises in global asset recovery with a focus on investor treaty arbitrations and their inherent enforcement challenges. She acted as the lead investigator in asset identification and enforcement cases involving two of the largest investor treaty arbitrations against Latin American countries in recent years. She has also focused on evidence gathering in the context of IP related disputes, particularly in the pharmaceutical sector. In one case, she assisted a multi-national to investigate, obtain evidence and block an alleged IP infringement of one of its most valuable products in Asia, Europe and the USA, saving several hundred million dollars. Joana has acted as an expert witness and provided witness statements on several client matters.
Fluent in Portuguese, English, French, Spanish and German, Joana is adept at developing sources and identifying witnesses. She maintains a network of international contacts which offer access to information in an array of sectors and jurisdictions.
Joana previously co-headed the dispute consulting practice of London based investigations firm GPW. Prior to that she spent five years working in Brussels and London for Diligence, another investigative consultancy. She began her career at the OECD in Paris and the United Nations.
Educated at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques (Sciences Po) in Paris, Université Paris X, Nanterre and ISCTE in Lisbon, in 2015 Joana was voted one of Management Today’s Top 35 Women Under 35, an award celebrating high-achieving women in business.
